Humming Bird Update
Launch
Date: - 20 August 2013
The update name
‘humming bird’ derived from speed and accuracy of humming bird. The objective
of Google humming bird update is to understand user search queries and provide
better, quick and accurate results to them. It basically focused on the actual
meaning behind the user queries. It helps in ranking those WebPages which are
relevant matches with user queries.
Humming bird update can
rank a webpage even if it does not contain exact keywords through language
processing system that relies on keywords synonyms, LSI (latent semantic
indexing)
The new search
algorithm Google "Hummingbird" aims to better interpret the search
requests of users and, therefore, to further increase the quality of search
results.
It is assumed that the
code name "Hummingbird" indicates that the search results will be
fast and accurate.
The name comes from
being precise and fast. Amit Singhal, Google Software Vice President.
The new search
algorithm can (better) interpret the search query as a whole, instead of
searching only individual words in the search query. This allows Google to
(better) understand the intent behind a user's search request, as well as the
focus / context of a full-text document (for example, a website). Both factors
focus on an improved version of the search results.
The hummingbird affects
all types of inquiries we receive, but it is much more effective in the lengthy
consultations we receive now.
Hummingbird pays more
attention to each word of a query, ensuring that the entire query, phrase,
conversation, or meaning is taken into account, rather than particular words.
The goal is that the pages corresponding to the meaning work better, rather
than the pages containing only a few words. Danny Sullivan, founding editor of
Search Engine Land
How do you know that
the update of Hummingbird works?
According to Google,
the update of Hummingbird should in particular improve the conversational
search, which uses your voice to define the search query. For verbal search
requests, the user's complete search request (the spoken sentence) is also
interpreted at a higher level and more relevant results are returned. This
means that search results are sorted differently than before, giving more
accurate answers.
Hummingbird facilitates
complex queries, but also covers over 90% of searches worldwide. - Amit Singhal

Google Hummingbird and
semantic search
At the heart of the
hummingbird is the very important concept of semantics or meaning. Even the
most stylish computers are still pretty stupid. Although it is easy for humans
to distinguish between two different but similar concepts (because of the
context), computers can only do so if explicit instructions are provided.

Semantic research is
the concept of improving the results of research by focusing on the intent of
the user and on how the subject of a search is related to other information in
the broadest sense, or their contextual relevance. Essentially, semantic search
focuses on determining the real meaning of a user, rather than on a string of
keywords, and then obtaining relevant results.
For example, if a user
searches on the term "weather", it is much more likely that he is
looking for a forecast for his area, not an explanation of the science or
history of meteorology.
Google's
algorithm can not be absolutely sure of what I want, so to be sure, it gives me
a variety of results. Google offers a local forecast (although this search was
done in a private browsing window, it still follows my location), a link to
Weather Channel, a Wikipedia page for the term "weather" and some
other information. Still, the importance of local forecasting data in Knowledge
Graph speaks volumes about Google's confidence in its results.
